"I never get tired of how excited our patients get about the terrific results they experience from chiropractic."

Mattituck and Shelter Island Chiropractor, Dr. James HinschI grew up in chiropractic.  My parents were not chiropractors but both had wonderful personal experiences with chiropractic when they were first married and quickly made it part of their lifestyle for themselves and their young family. As a matter of fact, I have an old statement from my Dad's chiropractor from 1953, and an adjustment cost $1.50!   When I was six weeks old, my parents took me to our chiropractor to make sure my spine was healthy and I've been enjoying the benefits of regular adjustments ever since.  It was when I was home on a break from school (Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA) that my mother suggested  that I  get my spine checked at our chiropractor's office.  I went, and when he asked me what I was studying, (psychology), he asked me if I had ever considered becoming a chiropractor,  I thought about it, and by the time I drove home (about 3 miles) I decided it was a natural choice.  I would be able to help people and give back to the profession that had done so much for me and my family at the same time.

A Chiropractic Education

Once I decided to become a chiropractor and changed my major, school and life seemed to accelerate and flow at the same time.  I particularly liked my anatomy and physiology courses as well as the many philosophy courses I took in both undergraduate as well as chiropractic college.  Perhaps the most interesting and exciting class was Professor Lewellen's Central Nervous System at Palmer College of Chiropractic, a terrific course made even better by a very dedicated teacher.

I never get tired of how excited our patients get after the terrific results they experience from chiropractic.  A particularly challenging case was a five year old boy with neurofibromatosis who was scheduled for surgery to insert a Harrington Rod into his spine to treat a twenty-eight degree scoliosis (spinal curvature).  I consulted with a chiropractic pediatric expert and set about a course of care to correct his scoliosis.  His parents and I watched as the boy's curvature went from twenty eight to fourteen to seven and then eventually zero.  I remember standing in their kitchen after the first set of x-rays were re-taken to reveal a 50% improvement in their son's scoliosis, his mom said to me "This is first time we've ever had good news about our son's health."  That alone was worth four long cold winters in Davenport, Iowa during chiropractic college.

On a Personal Note...

My wife, Lisa and I first met in high school, drifted apart from each other as we each went to college out of state, and then reunited in 1990, and were married in 1991.  We have two children, Zach and Ben, and as a family we enjoy camping, skiing and sailing in the the beautiful waters of our local bays.  Most summer weekends you can find us out on the water and Lisa frequently races our sailboat in the infamous "Wednesday night races" around Robins Island.

I get my spine checked and adjusted once each week, and I check my family just as often.  I work out three times each week, weightlifting and doing about forty five minutes of cardiovascular exercise each time.  Even though I walk all day in the office, and do hundreds of isometric muscle contractions each day, it's still not enough, I need to workout to be my absolute best.  Lisa and I are raising happy, healthy, drug free kids, who have never had a Tylenol or an antibiotic.

Enough about me!  How can we help with today's safe and natural chiropractic care? Give us a call or e-mail so we can help you take your first step towards better health."

Dr. Jim Asks some important questions of interest to Mattituck residents - Chiropractor Mattituck Dr. Jim Asks...

Will chiropractic adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are fixated and "locked up" receive attention. The occasional spinal joint that moves too much is passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can strengthen and heal.
Would you rather feel good or be healthy?
Ask most people in Mattituck and they want to feel good. Careful! Would you take medicine that makes you feel good, rather than vomit to expel improperly prepared food? Every chiropractic patient knows that you can't measure your health by how you feel. True health is when your body works as it should.
